Since "most" applications' Perf files will launch the application, he
could use aliases of the Perf files and rename them whatever he thinks are
appropriate.  That way double-clicking the alias will launch a single copy

As of this response I still haven't heard a thing yet. I'm beginning to get
a little PO'd. The order has been in now for over 2 months with no response.
Never did get around to calling them, I'll give them a call today after they
open.

Now if we could only pull the cigarette lighter and install an output from the

Another thing they could do is put the guts of a Mac Classic on a board that
plugs into the machine and co-processes with the RISC processor. Software
bridges
could be written to use the hard drive, keyboard, display, and mouse of the
RISC machine and any I/O not supported by the RISC machine could be brought
out the back of the card.

Why should that make any difference? Do you really think that "evidence" was
never manipulated before computers were invented? If you do you are terribly
naive. Computers are a powerful tool for falsifying information but they are
equally as powerful at ferreting out such deception.

There have been clever techniques for image manipulation which defied expert
detection long before computers came along. As with anything else, all it takes
is a little skill. As consumers, we must educate ourselves about the forces

in the light of such forces. Try to find as many disparate information sources
as you possibly can. This being the information age, that is easier to do now
than it has ever been. Would you tie yourself to just one source for computer
hardware and software. Why should your information be any different. Be very
critical and selective about your sources and only use the ones that generally
provide reliable information. The thing working against the manipulators is
that it is very hard to reconstruct history in a consistent fashion. THe better
informed you become on a subject the harder it will be for someone to
hornswaggle
you.

I've got this from another echo. It's 'straight from the authors mouth'.

Suitcase II versions 1.2.6 through 1.2.10 have a bug which may in some
circumstances caush a crash, particularly at startup time, depending on
other INITs in use. This bug may show itself more frequently with
System 7.0 than with earlier Systems. Note that version 1.2.10 is
required for use with System 7.0, and is recommended for use with any
System.

The bug may be fixed with a patch using the following procedure.

With ResEdit, open a copy of Suitcase II that is not currently in use.
Double click on the INIT resource type; in the ensuing window double-
click on INIT 128 (the only item). Choose Find Hex from the Find menu.
In the Change Hex dialog box, *carefully* type the following values.
Then click the Find Next button. (If ResEdit beeps in response, there
has been an error.) Then click the Change button. Quit, confirming that
changes are to be saved.

Find Hex: 7007
Change to: 7060

Does anyone know if its possible to include the entire postscript font
within an eps document. If so, I would like to include a self-designed
font in an Eps document for a hypercard stack I,m working on. Wher can I
get info on how to write code for a PostScript font matrix. No need to
employ Fontographer, this is a very simple, small character set. Maybe you
know of a book that includes these guidelines? I know this is a rater
obscure topic, so if you have anything, let me know.

I did, actually ... but I'm not next to my magazine rack full of "Keyboard"
back issues (I'm at work), but a quick rattle of the brain cells produces the
name "Passport" ... meaning that that company has actually done something like
this. It's eight voice, as well, but (going on Studio Session) the sound quality
would be fairly woeful.

Let me get back to you on that.

It was, actually - a cut-down A2000 functioning as a preipheral for the Mac.

Todd would disagree with you there; his latest project was a complete video
clip produced on the MT (yet to be shown on MTV from what I hear). He said it
was fun, but compared to the Mac, it was nowhere near as seamless; if it wasn't
for the fact that the MT was based on an Amiga (in his case, controlled by one
as well) he wouldn't have used it. There was a recent article about that in
Keyboard.

  Thanks for the info.  I'm using the roundabout method...  I have a
fairly large library of Clip-art (my own original work).  Most of it
was created and stored in the .PCX (PC Paint+) format.
  Well, here goes---  I first convert then to .A01 image files (created
by Smart Scan scanner utility software, it creates a >very< small size
file.  I then reformat to .PCX or .TIF (or other Smart
Scan format), the resulting .PCX file is 50-70% smaller than the
original PC PAINT .PCX file.  (hope I'm not losing ya').
  I then use GRAFWS22.PAK (Graphics Workshop) to convert to .GIF format.
  O.K., finally if I need to import the file into Wordperfect I use a
utility call GIF2WP.WP (shareware), the reason for not importing
directly into WP with a .PCX is that the matrix for the bit-map in WP
is condensed in hieght and "squashes" the original by 10-12% of orig
height.
  Doesn't graphics on a PC sound like fun...???...?
  I'd be interested in exchanging files between the two platforms
(PC/MAC) and would trade 2 for 1 in UL/DL ratio.  Leave a message to
make file transfer arrangements.

Well - lets work on that, okay.  Have you read the faxes yet? If you have,
go into the system file and trash Unopened Mail, Restart, then open
InterFax (application), quit InterFax, go to the Control Panel, open
InterFax Control and you should see that they are now gone.

Concerning version 1.2.4 and 1.2.5 - scuttlebutt is that they found a bug
(again) and pulled them off.  Appears they are caught up with this system
7 fever and are trying to please all the people that also have this fever,
leaving the 6.x and lower owners hanging in the wings.  Most people that
have the InterFax are business types (precision oriented) and are not
caught up with the newer Hulla Hoop of the week syndrome.  It appears that
we will have to suffer it out (as usual) until the storm calms down.  I
tell people they had better not buy products on impulse at $400+, as they
will have a nice looking machine that might sit on the shelve for a long
time.  Version 1.2.3 appears to work OK and is the safe bet for now.  Wish
they would put it in a DA configuration like Dove has.  It is so much
simpler to get to.  Just think, to have a machine that can run sys 7 and
the books and applications for it (sys 7) and then go buy a faxmodem for
400+ (and wait until the company gets their act together with a version
that works well) leaves the average guy out.  Someone is gonna suffer and
it will not be the average guy - he will just go to a simpler
configuration at a cheaper cost.  AND have fun and pleasure at the same
time.  (do you think Everex is evesdropping?)  Hope so...  Chat with you
later.  P.S.  If you run into anyone with a HyperDrive 2000, let me know,
I need some information concerning it.  In fact I am starting a collection
of HyperDrive memorabilia so that others can tie into me for info and

You have to be in Vt100, and you have to have it turned on with the
checkbox in the Emulation Selection Dialog. There is a file available on
this BBS and others called EE.sit or Easy Emulation that contains a
procedure that set it all up for you with instructions. Color must also be
enabled in WK, if you do not have color enabled, it will not work either.

 Wait a minute. Doesn't the QMS 410 allow you to hook up both a PC and
AppleTalk Mac simultaneously already? Methinks you are baiting me, yes?

 As for the networking, here is what I am coming to conclude in my quest
to join my wife's PC and my Mac on one printer: too much $$$ and problem
to think about it!
 From what I am hearing, it will cost me about $360+ to get the
AppleTalk board & software that Farralon is now marketing after buying
it from Apple. It appears (so far) to be the most reliable and
affordable networking option out there.
 Which is why I am now asking myself if its worth doing?
 As I mentioned, I have a LaserWriter II NT (non expandable, etc). Great
for a Mac. Not great for a Mac and PC combined.
 So, my other alternative: Sell me IINT and consider either:
 1) Buying a QMS 410 with auto sensing to allow my Mac and her PC to
hook up simultaneously, or
 2) Buy her an HP IIP (maybe even a IIIP) and buy myself a lower cost
laserprinter, possibly a TI PS17 or a nonpostscript laserprinter.

 It just seems that when your networking needs are minimal, there isn't
really a very cost effective alternative except to buy separate machines
or buy one with the option built it (QMS 410).

 By the way, does anyone know of any other machine besides the QMS 410
that will allow you to hook up a Mac and PC simultaneously and
automatically switch to accomodate printing from both?

Call USR at 1-800-dialusr, and get infromation on their refurbished modems.
I think the price on a HST is around $399.

Aaron, I just bought my USR HST Dual Standard modem (14.4, v.42, v.42bis, v.32,
v.32
bis). The best price that I came up with was from Computer Integration
Technologies (1-609-881-3301) in Glassboro, NJ. The DS HST was $770 while the

HST was I think $450. These were for new modems. Also, if you can find the same
modem (new) for a cheaper price they will match it. They seem eager to sell
these
modems and were very helpful.

  Nope.. the ANSI color set contains 16 colors, 8 dark colors, and the
same 8 colors but in high intensity. That allows to make nice screen
display with "shadows" and 3D look (in text mode of course..). For
instance you can have bright green text on a dark green background. The
ANSI standard only allow you to put dark colors for the background (so
only 8 different colors for the background), but any of the 16 colors for
foreground text.

  Blinking text is almost impossible to do in graphic mode... the terminal
I use on my Amiga (Jrcomm) put the text in boldface instead of blinking,
this is a good compromise IMHO.

Yes, AccessPC does recognize DOS-formatted diskettes automatically. Files
copied onto it are written using the DOS format, and a Desktop file is created

tht first time the Mac changes anything on the diskette (or looks).

One of the better things (that I have not personally verified) is their tech
support people claim that it will read diskettes formatted with DOS 5.0 --
which is something that I have not been able to do with Apple File Exchange.
Should this work, as they claim, it means that it will be a crucial element
in
file translation using tools such as MacLink Translators...

Speculations is right... I don't believe any of this for an instance. Look,
LocalTalk has gone as far as its going to go.  The specs for it are out and
widely published, and it works well.  The fact that Apple won't be doing any
futher Localtalk research is good news.... THAT means they can concentrate on
the new technology that will be going into the Macintosh called Ethertalk.
A much faster and superior networking scheme which needs to be adopted.  And
i'm sure Apple will be doing its best to see to it that the bridge from
Appletalk
to Ethertalk is smooth as can be.

1.7 is now released and is mainly a bug fix so that may be one of the bugs
address.
 It also lets the sysop edit many of the various strings that prompts users.

I have had this file for some time and it works, albeit rather poorly.  You
must configure QMail on the bulletin board to use .ARC for the packer.  If that
option is not available, you can forget it.  Also, though it does save your
replies, I have found no way of getting the replies uploaded to the system
correctly.
 In my opinion, it simply isn't worth it.

I also use the unzip 101 utility, but find my classic likes the Zipop a lot
more!  As far as the errors go I can only assume that if the archive was created
by a sw-pd utility then it may not be recognized.
On a different note...I will be in New York in a few weeks and need to know
if any one out there knows of a reputable dealer out there who would handle
second hand Hard Drives ( 20 or 40 meg), I am setting up a BBS for my local
user group members to access and need a second storage unit.....Another
important
factor is that I am a university and extremely cheap!  The less expensive the
better!
Any one know if there is an Un-LZH for the mac?

No, when I exceeded the heap size in it merely trimmed from the beginning of
the buffer.  Since it didn't tell me this I was a little irritated, but at least

Thank you Franke Ojeda for your comments and advice. - Yes, you are very
correct about Everex.  They still have not answered my fax that I had sent
to technical support almost four (4) months ago...  Wouldn't you think
that is unbelievable?  If people ask me about my machine, I tell them they
had better be ready for no support.  By the way, I have been informed by
two (2) people so far that there is a version 1.2.5 that corrects the
problem I have been having.  Now I hear that that has been pulled of the
market.  You would think that Abaton would send out a notice to owners.
How much would it cost them - 29?...I paid almost US$400 for my machine
that probably cost them US$86 and they will not answer my requests for
help nor inform me of bugs and upgrades.  By the way do you have any

Well, I'm not surprised that Abaton would release software and then recall it
(I'm referring to 1.2.5)  I bet most of their "upgrades" deserved similar
treatment!  Seriously, I think they just DON'T TEST their software.  No
alpha-testing, not beta-testing...  They must just write it, run it a couple
times to make sure the Mac doesn't explode, and release.

One of my clients has just ordered an Interfax (yes, I did recommend it to
him), and we ARE ready for "no support"....  Why did I choose the Abaton?
Because I just can't find a better fax-modem.  Dove's model is fully
software-driven, which I don't like or recommend; better to have a modem with
its own power supply.  Then... some fax-modems don't have MNP...

The Interfax is the only "proven" fax-modem that includes all the features I
find essential.

Interfax is to fax-modems what Macintosh is to computers:  "A great product,
from a company that doesn't give a hoot about its customers."

I'm afraid I'm as new as you are on this subject. I would think the only way
you could use Hermes is if you had your own point <correct usage?> set up. This
would envolve a whole lot of work just to set up, not to mention the time and
money to maintain! (Actually you'd have your own bbs at this point!)  I think
a message reader is just an offline reader. But I'm probably wrong about this.

Good luck and let me know what you find out. BTW I have heard of some type of
reader using HyperCard

the government has been greatly restricted during the last eleven years.  It
is harder to find out what the Government is doing.  And media  concentration
has become ever higher, with the major media networks belonging to a small,
concentrated group of corporate interests, who don't necessarily want to provide
you with a lot of information, but only  certain kinds.  Look at TV, most of
the information you get is mindless fluff spittle like 'Entertainment Tonight',
'Oprah', 'A current Affair.'   This is not information that serves people or
our society, but information in the service of corporate profits.  That is
especially
infuriating to me when I htink about the fact that those public airwaves belong
to the public, and we grant broadcast rights in return for crap like 'Oprah'
and 'Sally J.'  America needs to take back the airwaves.

Have you heard of the move to create a fiber optic information highway?  This
is the next great battle of information access.  Some people want to  have this
available only to large universities and corporations and the Government.
Others
think it should be available to all households (a position I agree with
wholeheartedly!).

   MacWarehouse has StuffIt Deluxe for $62.

   As to why the price difference, why is it commercial, why do I like it
better?

1 - Despite the fact that Deluxe is slower than Compactor Pro it still
    compresses better (not much mind you, but the archives I've tested
    are smaller).

2 - Extensions:  There are QuicKeys Extensions, two DAs, and a couple of
    others that don't come readily to mind.

3 - It works from within other applications:  White Knight is one of these.
    There are routines in White Knight that will automatically unstuff any
    files you download.  (IF you have StuffIt Deluxe v2.0+)

4 - The ability to open more than ONE archive:  You can have up to eight
    archives open at any one time, and move/copy files between any or all
    of them.  Neither Compactor Pro or StuffIt Classic will do this.

5 - Encryption: Only StuffIt Deluxe has a password function in it.

6 - If you have both StuffIt Deluxe and Shortcut you can Stuff/UnStuff
    from within dialog boxes.  Shortcut will also look within your StuffIt
    archives to find the file you can't remember where you put it. (And
    then give you the choice to decompress it.)

   And, if you are a registered user of StuffIt Classic, you can discount
the $25 shareware fee from the price of Deluxe if you order from Aladdin (as
apposed to ordering from MacWarehouse or MacConnection).   Hmmm, come to
think of it, that would still be more expensive than via mail order.  :-(

I've found on my IIci with 8meg RAM and System 7, that going to 32bit addressing
gave me about 10-20% faster speed than 24bit does.  Windows pretty much snap
open now.  I can see a definate slowdown if I turn off 32bits.  I've found that
most of my software works fine in 32bit mode.  I'm not running VM at the moment,
other than to verify that it worked.

NeXT has the hottest hardware available. Unfortunately, there is no NeXT
equivalent
of PageMaker, something that breaks new ground and sells new machines, although

Jeez, I remember when the Mod I Expansion Chassis was the greatest thing on
earth! I never did invest in a disk drive, since I was only 9 when I got it,
and couldn't afford it. I put up with cassette tape, something I hope everybody
reading this never had to do (even tho I know better..). I do remember one
company
making some kind of "wafer" disk drive, but it's been so long that I don't
remember
the details. More trivia--the Hacker Test, that ultimate measure of someone's
true computer know-how, has an Operating System category, in which it asks if
you know this or that OS (the Mac's is listed as Finder). Instead of asking
about any one TRS-80 OS, however, it merely asks if you know "more than one
DOS for the TRS-80". :-]

You're right--my error. I had based it on the assumption that development work

I just caused one of those last night, after running the latest (development)
version of a homebrew project. Actually, the program bombed into MacsBug with
an unimplemented instruction, and after I checked the application heap (ok),
switched to the system heap, checked it (ok), switched back, and typed "es",
it all went up in (figurative) smoke. Most impressive. Unfortunately, it was
not the original purpose of the program... :-]

Guess I need more RAM...

Yes, HandOff II has a drop down menu format like OnCue.  It has many more
features than On Cue.  However, in my opinion, the interface was poor.  I
always had problems with it.  I hear the newer version is much improved.

Utilities will have much improved file launching capabilities.  Also, a
new version of OnCue is due real soon.

Not necessarily, Chip.  It could look only inside the system folder and all
folders therein.  Or, if you have an alias to the Easy Envelopes DA in the Apple
menu folder, it could be finding the picture through the alias to the EE DA.

Free Geneva was written by one of the font geniuses at Apple.  I didn't know

There are some problems when printing to a PostScript device, but only when
font substitution is turned on.  The problems are in the Laserwriter driver,
and not in PostScript itself.  From what I have seen, TrueType itself is, if
not "rock solid," damn well near.

  Yes.  It's almost exactly like opening an SE, save for the curved top
and bottom.  (Yes, you need the prying tool or equivalent)

  I don't know about his warrenty, but as for his warranty -- if something
goes wrong enough for him to bring it in to a dealer, there's really no
way to tell that an "unauthorized" person has been in the case.  And yes,
you could have a dealer do it for you if you wish.

  Just one think to keep in mind.  If he doesn't already have a 2 meg
Classic, there's nowhere to put the SIMMs.  You have to add a classic
memory board to a 1 Meg Classic before you add any SIMMs.  (The sockets
for them are on the memory board)

You must still have SOMETHING unusual on your Mac that conflicts with

 I'm running SuperClock 3.9 under System 7 on my SE/30 at home and on several
more at work without any problems, and all those SE/30s are loaded with

Maybe I just don't understand what you're trying to do, but why do you need
multiple copies of Microphone?  All the config info is stored in the individual
Microphone settings files you create for each service, BBS, or whatever, not
in the program itself, so I can't imagine any reason to need more than one copy
of Microphone on your system.  The individual settings files can be put
anywhere.
 They don't have to be in the same folder as Microphone.

Stuffit Classic 1.6 CAN create self-extracting archives.  Create a normal
archive,
then while it is still open pull down the "Other" menu and select one of the
"Self-Unstuffer" options.  There should be a folder called Self-Unstuffers in
the same folder as StuffIt.  If you don't have it, you don't have the full
Classic
package and the SEA option won't work.

I have been having some frequent problems with the operations of my Mac Plus.
 Almost once a day, the screen completley fills with a strange pattern, and
everything is locked up (not that I could see anything on the screen anyway
after those patterns).

Another similar freeze my computer has been experiencing is that when a program
is launched.  Once in a while, when a program is launched, the scren will just
freeze, everything will stop, and the mouse will freeze as well.

Can anyone help me????

Close but no weo, Geoff. Todd Rundgren used ten Amiga 2500's equipped with 300
meg hard drives and 650 meg WORM drives to create his "Change Myself" video.
Macs weren't involved. Todd Rundgren said that he found the Amiga user interface
to be "quirky". As someone who hops back and forth between Macs, Amigas, and
other, lesser, machines, I can understand why he would say that. If you are
accustomed to performing a particular function in a particular way, you would
find the way another system does it to be uncomfortable. For example, I find
that the way you create subdirectories on the Amiga under Workbench 1.3 to be
a pain compared to the way that the Mac does it. (BTW this has been corrected
on Workbench 2.0.) However I find that the system requestors on the Mac to be
a pain compared to the way the Amiga handles them. Both systems have their
strong
points and their weak points. But it is important when you are evaluating a
system to make sure that your evaluations are not tainted by your habits.
As for the Mac version of the Video Toaster, it is not a cut down A2000. The
Mac Video Toaster is an A2000 OEM purchased from Commodore and is identical
to the Amiga 2000HD being sold by Amiga dealers. The only difference is that
the Amiga keyboard and mouse are offered as options.

You can attact any other SCSI periphal to the LW IISC's other SCSI port.  It
is just like any other SCSI device on the bus.  The printer itself has no
brains,
is uses the Mac for all imaging. Adding PS or TT fonts to you Mac, and more
memory to it, will increase it's operating potential.  The LW IINTX is the only
Apple printer you can attach a font drive to.  It also has SIMM slots for font
cards.

The fear in airports is no the x-rays, it's the magnetic fields involved in
the machine.  Even if you x-ray a computer it will look like a metal box and
you could be force to turn it on to prove what it is.  I always have my

The LaserWriter IINT will emulate the Diablo630 letter quality printer.  Take
you PC serial port and connect it to the DB25 on the NT.  Flip a couple of DIP
switches and redirect the PC output from the parallel port to the serial port
(MODE LPT1=COM1:9600,n,8,1).  Instructions are in the LW manual.  It is a manual
operation, but it's cheap.  If you PC programs support postscript, the LW also
has a direct postscript mode and then you get all the fonts and graphics you
use.

I get the feeling that IBM is looking for something to replace NextStep.
ie: a UNIX base with a "Finder" on top of it like Apple's UNIX.  IBM has

stopped all work on NextStep - which was to be such a big deal

Usually it's much easier on a Mac.  I suggest the "kits" from CMS for a first
time user.  Although they are supposed to be installed by your dealer, they
have good instructions included.

External drives (from any source) are even easier.  Set the address, plug it
in and turn it on.  Most come formatted with some form of System software
installed
- usually 6.0.3 or 6.0.7.

Following the advice of the copy of Steve Brecher's (author of
Suitcase) instructions on how to use ResEdit 2.1 to make a patch to
Suitcase II, I opened a copy of Suitcase with ResEdit, double-clicked
on the INIT resource type, then double-clicked on the "INIT 128" item
(the only item) in the ensuing window, bringing up a window with the
following menu: "File Edit (dimmed), Resource, Window, Marker,
Modules".  No FIND option in the menu here.  The only way I could get
the FIND option to appear is to OPTION-double click on the "INIT 128"
item, giving a menu in the window this time with "Edit",not dimmed, and
"Find" replacing "Marker" and "Modules".  Seems that ResEdit appears to
work differently for me.  Could it be a function of System 7, of my
IIcx, or of my selection of INITs and CDEVs, I wonder?

To all:
I'm curious.  When putting a copy of a previous message the is now
being replied to at the beginning of a message with the initials of the
originator of the message that is being replied to, why do people
choose to put the initials as a preffix many times as I've shown in the
first example below, instead of putting the entire text of the message
in between one prefix and suffix (preffix: DG>,  SUFFIX: <DG) as I've
shown in the second example?  I personally find the second example FAR
MORE READABLE.

first example:

JClock, if I remember correctly was the first menu clock for the Mac.  I
remember
having it on my old 128.  I seem to also remember that JClock needed an
installer
because it actually was installed into your system file.

There is another program appropriately called JCRemover which will remove JClock
from your system.  If you can find that file and I forgot which resource it
modified you will have to reinstall your system to get rid of it.  Worse yet,
as simple reinstall will not suffice since the installer only works with
modifying
its own code.

You will need to start up with your system tools disk and then remove your
system
from your hard disk and trash it them run the installer again so it will replace
a complete new system file.  Be sure to remember to save any DA's and Font's
that you might have installed in your system because this method will cause
you to loose all of them!

Good luck and try to make sure you know what you are installing nest time BEFORE
you do installing.

The NBS did a study on this question and, *for the most part,* you're right.
There is, however, reliable anecdotal evidence that problems can happen with
improperly adjusted inspection machines amd/or marginal media.  As always with
computers, when in doubt, back it up.  When not in doubt, back it up anyway.

Could be a couple of things. Most screen lock-ups occur because of sttic
electricity
(younever see this documented)--make sure you are not building up static from
a carpet etc.

Another reason could be a virus--there are some that do exactly what you say
is happening. Try running Disinfectant or Vaccine or if you have it Sam Virus
Clinic.

Many times when applications open slowly the desktop file needs to be rebuilt.
Hold down the option command key and resrart. You get a message that asks if
you really want to do this--click yes. The only drawback is that you lose the
info in comments section of get info--for the most part  tht'a no big deal.

Look back at waht you did the last couple of days ie install any new DAs,
INITS,
packages esp debuggers like MACSBUG etc. If you did take them out and see if
that makes a difference.

I would definitely run a quick virus check first just in case. Also, somebody
had the same problem and wrote into MACUSER--I'll see if i can find the reply.

Yes it is, and there are only 4 screws (like the SE but unlike the Plus).

 Yup, am sure. That is one of the big differences between the IINT and
the IINTX (besides the 020 chip and being able to add ram of course).

 The conclusion I am drawing from my quest so far is that there  really
isn't a good alternative for a small networking task of one Mac and one
IBM.... Seems like it might be a better option to sell my LWIINT and buy
another laserprinter (non-Apple) that has it built in, perhaps, or
simply buy TWO laserprinters. That last option guarantees no network
problems, of course.....

Anyone who has experience with Texas Instrument's PS17 or PS35
laserprinters, could you please give me a little feedback?
 I am considering that printer, as one low-cost way of connecting my
wife's IBM XT and my Mac to the same printer. I was looking at some of
TI's promotional material, and noticed that it said (I think I read this
right) that you could hook up both a Mac and a PC and that it was not
difficult to switch back and forth between the Postscript and HPII
emulations. (I know this is not auto sensing, but an easy manual method
would work fine for me, I think.)
 Has anyone had any experience trying to do something like that with the
TI printers?

 Additionally, I'd appreciate any additional feedback on the quality of
the printed page, ease of use, reliability, ease and cost of
consumables, ... anything that would help someone unfamiliar with the TI
laserprinter.

 I am used to using a LaserWriter IINT, so that is my reference point.

Derek, the latest version is 2.07b. It seems to work on any SCSI hard drive.
It
optimizes my internal 105Q, external 40Q and Syquest removable.

On my Mac IIci running Sys7, my ZTerm .85 buffer gets to about 100K and then
it flushes to disk if I have Capture on.  It then resets and starts counting
up again.  I've never lost anything when this happens.

How would you like to add CMD-KEYs to Make Alias, Empty Trash, Restart, and
Shut Down in the finder for System 7? - Here's How:
1. Make a copy of the Finder by holding down the Option key while dragging it
to another folder.

2. Open this Finder using ResEdit.

3. Double click on fmnu

4. To add Cmd-M to Make Alias double click on ID 1252

5. Find:     $00000A4D
   Change to:$4D000A4D - Close window

6. To add Cmd-T to Empty Trash double click on ID 1255

   Find:     $00000C45
   Change to:$54000C45

   To add Cmd-R to ReStart

   Find:     $00000752
   Change to:$52000752

   To add Cmd-S to Shut Down

   Find:     $00000153
   Change to:$53000153

   or to add Cmd-Q to Shut Down

   Change to:$51000153   - Close all windows

7. Click YES at dialog window - Quit from ResEdit - Move Original finder from
the system file (Do not throw away until you're sure everything works.)

8. Put the finder you have modified into the system folder and restart.

I've used both...and each in turn has told me that it could not open a zip file,
which the other was able to open.  As my business involves a great deal of
interfacing
between my Mac and PCs, being able open zips was crucial, making it worth
retaining
both on the drive. (Along with LHarc so I could produce a compressed file to
send to my PC partner.)

Having just received SoftPC, I probably won't be dealing with the problem any
longer.  Can't say as I'll miss it.

(Now if only the PC could open .sits or .cpts!)
